Learning Groups:
Adult students learn from each other. A difficult concept introduced by the instructor may be better understood by one student if another student restates it.
Group exercises are a plus in the learning experience and can be a lifesaver for the instructor.
unless its controled groups right in class I think its really good tool
I am an RN nursing instructor and have a group of 6 nursing students, in the RN program, working in a group, preparing a presentation/group therapy session, to 6-13 psych/substance abuse patients in a psyvhiatric hospital unit. The group has a team leader, who has various responsibilities within the group and to this instructor. My past student groups with this assignment have done a great job but have required reminders, direction, editing by me of the material to be presented and supervision as a whole. I have seen them disagree and argue at times. Some have come to me regarding the direction that other team members want to take the group in, with the project. In general they've shared their perspectives, beliefs and opinions and have come out with an acceptable product. I believe that the instructor must "touch bases" with each student and with the group as a whole.
Larry,
yes & often in the group settings, students can explain the concepts to one another in different ways & this helps them "get it" more than when we say it.
