Monitoring Students

Monitoring students is a good strategy to employ to prevent undesirable behaviors. It also shows that the instructor cares enough for his or her students as individuals.

Each student in my class is instructed from the begining of class these are the class rules, please follow them. I will monitor the students to make sure that they are following the class rules. The hardest thing I have to deal with is cell phone usage.

I let my students know that they cannot use cell phones per policy on the first day of the module. I let them know that there will be 1 warning and then I will do write ups if I do see them out. I notice that after I actually follow up and give the student their warning, they follow the rules for the rest of the module and the other students follow suit. I hope that helps!

Heather,
this unfortunately is a common problem. One suggestion might be to simply ban cell phones & internet usage during class. I know this is extreme but may be required.

In monitoring students I see some off task at times. Facebook and cell phones are my biggest barriers at current. If I corected this behavior everytime I saw it, I think it's all I would do. Any suggestions?

Just being available solves many problems.

Kundukisa,
I agree completely. If you are going to use groups as part of your instructional strategy, you really need to monitor their progress.
