Student groups

Early in the class I like to pre-test or dertermine the experience level of the students to better place them evenly into groups. Each group then is even in terms of ablilty and encourages everyone to contribute.

I believe teaching groups in a kitchen is wrong because they need to realize that is not how it is in the "real world":

this is a great strategy & plan for developing the most effective groups.

I think that's an excellent idea, because it allows the groups to be on an even level, and help facilitate discussion. I know that some groups would be less inclined to partici[ate thinking that they were in the worse group and that anything they brought forth would not be "good enough."
