Learning to bond with your students
Listen to students when there talking
More than just listening to students, reiterating what they tell you, does two things; it models the behavior we want from them but it shows the student that you heard them and care about what they just said, thereby creating that critical bond. Having direct communication with each student daily is helpful to create a bond - it shows them that you know them... Our classes tend to be under 25 in number and therefore, it is easier to try to have direct commnication daily (or at least every other day).
Jo,
this is a great point & I think by letting them share their experiences it demonstrates that you respect their experiences & value them.

Teaching adult learners brings with it the challenge of "they know everything" mentality. I believe it is critical to create a bond with students to attain trust and therefore students learn better. :)
I think bonding with your students is to learn there names, learn what type of study habits they have, and always do a one on one about there progress in your class.
I teach a medical course and find it helpfull to relay information to certain students by relating it to auto mechanics.
Francine,
yes, we need to show them the same courtesy we want from them.
