Student Diversity
When forming groups I try to develop a diverse group by combining students of various learning styles, social skills and knowledge levels. I try to encourage participation of all members by facilitating discussion through checking in with the group while they are coming together to plan. At that point I can determine if there is a back seat driver and if I need to increase motivators for full participation.
Megan,
and this can provide a great learning opportunity for those in the group on how to function & operate & step up to be leaders when needed.

Group work can be challenging though if there are no clear "leaders" in the group. I tend to step back and observe first to try to get a feel for the groups dynamic leaders.

Lisa,
yes the diversity in the groups really is key to making them successful & representative of real life.

I had to choose surgery groups for the Veterinary Tech Program. I picked all different personalities in each group. This seems to be working great for the strong personalities can help the shy personalities.
