how do you deal with the same student always taking charge of their small group

unfortunately this is a common problem. One solution might be to move the groups around & if you have a couple of the outspoken, dominant types, put them in a group together so they have to work through this. Another option is to assign specific roles to the group members & to assign the dominant member a more backseat type of role & see how they do with this. Just a couple of ideas.

Im my class room if i see a student that is always taking charge ill see how the student is doing on the job. If i feel they are doing the job at a good rate ill pull them to the side and ask them to kinda be a tutor. Have them watch over the other students and not put in his input unless asked or if he see them doing something wrong. Not to be forceful but sugesstive.
