I've never made a group
So it's good to know why I would put students into a group, and what i would look for in order to make the group diversified.
Nikkole,
as a new instructors I would encourage you to carefully plan the group projects so they are the most effective.

As a new instructor and a new instructor of a small class, I have not had the opportunity to form groups...yet. I find this technique very insightful and will definitely apply when I have the opportunity to and like that it is positive for the classmates to learn each others backgrounds and strengths.
Katherine,
and through this process they learn to listen to others & also the idea that there is value in team work.

I like to use group learning with class work. Group works helps the students to bounce ideas from one another.
I often make groups. Sometimes for a brief session and sometimes longer. I teach Nursing and have used them for different objectives and current affairs that are medically related. Another group idea I have used is for patient teaching-they can put on a skit, research, ect. It gets everyone moving around and I always put different people in the groups.
