Diverse learners

I believe it is important to treat each student individually. This helps me to find out what I have to do to reach them. Without that an instructor may loose a good amount of their classes interest because the students may not feel a direct connection to their instructor. It is important for the student to feel as if their instructor really cares about their success.

Hi Said! Identifying students' needs, as you reference, is part of preparing ourselves and our students for the learning process; here are the major questions we address:

-What learning outcome do we want to accomplish?
-What skills need to be acquired in order to obtain that outcome?
-What skills and experiences do our students already bring to the table in the learning process?
-How will we adapt our delivery of instruction based upon the needs of our students?
-What resources do we need?
-How will we assess student progress?

Given the importance of identifying student needs in this process, I'm curious, Said, what tools or processes do you use to determine what those needs are?

Thanks so much for your comments,

I believe that it is our responsibility to indetify the students' needs and assist them in achieveing ther goals in the short and long run.

At my institution, we have the students take a learning assessment test. This allows the instructor, as well as the student identify what methods will work best for them. We have had a lot of success with this. Students learn how to focus on their strong points, and improve on their week.
