Grading Assignments from ELL students
In an online environment, it is challenging to work with students who are learning English. Early in my career, I would feel a little apprehensive about pushing students to write using correct business English. I had to remind myself that English is the language of business. As an instructor of students in distance education, I have to really encourage the student(s) to visit the Writing Lab. So many of them would benefit by having someone work one-on-one with them.
Good approach Stacey!
Giving every student the same opportunity is positive. The less challenges student doesn't feel like other students are getting special treatment. AND - I think it helps the challenged student in 2 ways 1) they have the opportunity to make corrections where necessary, and 2) they don't feel so much different than other students.
Good job!

I only have one research component in my class as a chef and trying to grade fairly with an ELL student can be difficult. I admire that they are bilingual and learning in a language that is different for them. However, to be fair to the other students you can't ignore the spelling/grammar section of the rubric. I tell all of the students that they can turn in their reports early if they want me to look it over to see if they are on the right track and it can be especially useful for this type of learner.
Many areas offer free ESL classes through Literacy Foundation non-profit groups. I would definitely recommend career instructors explore options for free English classes in your area so that you can offer a list of resources for your students. Even as an online instructor,if the student is near a major metro area, chances are there is a Literacy group with free ESL classes. Besides teaching at a career college, I also teach for a local community college where they offer free non-credit ESL classes as do many of the local churches.
