not everyone is created equal

it's up to the instructor to challenge, excite and fill those students mental capacities, but how do you deal with a student who has a mental or physical disability like autism or cerebral palsy?

Hi Francine!

What a good way to look at it - no we are not create the same. Just because we have some challenges in the classroom doesn't necessarily mean we are LD.

Keep up the good work!

Research lots of research...There are alot of teacher that have had to deal with children that are difficult to teach.I too have had my share, but all i can do is find by what any means nessasary to help them. I have one student who has dyslexia and I did'nt know about it til I asked her to go to the board and spell and give meaning of the word. That's when i realized and now work one on one with her .

I currently have a student with autism in my introduction to computer science course at my ground university. The challenge for me as an instructor is to provide far more structure in the course than what I am used to. Using word cues to help him understand when it is appropriate to ask questions rather than just speaking out at any moment has been a huge help. The social aspect is also very difficult. The first time I had him join a group for a project... it did not go well. I alow him to choose whether he feels he can join a group or not. Some weeks are good, others are not. There is no clear cut answer to this... we simply take it day by day.
