Language Barriers

I came to the US with limited English from Germany...what helped me is MUSIC...simple songs will create fluency and give you assurance in your speach

I think this is an awesome idea! There are several students with language barriers that share the same interests when it comes to music. Using music as the common language can help open doors to other possibilities.

That's so true. In fact, sometimes in my classes we have a bit of fun making up alternate meanings for some acronyms. It's a good way of breaking the tension and being creative with language use.

I have known many people who have stated that the way that they learned English was through music. One of my son's teachers came from Turkey and speaks English very well now as a result of her early curiosity of Madonna's music that caused her to want to learn the language. I know that the School House Rock series that used to be on television and now on video has been useful in teaching individuals through the use of music and various subjects.

I'll have to try this? it sound like it might work.

Music is a great way to apply to memory words and phrases, along with watching cartoons, simple child like phrases are usually attached to visuals that will also assist in the learning process.

While I can see using acronyms would make word to definition easier, I feel it is important for them to also know the full description. So many acronyms have multiple meanings depending on the field in which they are being used.

Music is a great way to help with word recognition. I have also found that acronyms can also help or mnemonics that allow groups of words like Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point to be shortened to HACCP and the ELL learner has a much easier time retaining the words and meaning.
