diversity
i like to put student from different background together on a project and have them exchange idea and different approach to resolve or accomplish the task, this is great for them
Although diversity has its advantages in terms of bring students from varied backgrounds together for team projects, diversity can have some disadvantages as well. What are some of the challenges that groups may face because of their diversity?
I agree that the more diversity within a group, the more ideas and experiences one is exposed to. Also students have the tendency to judge based on appearance as do many adults. Having to work as a group may increase ones understanding and possibly earn their respect. They will not only learn something from the other members of their group, but also learn something about themselves.
This is a good idea as it exposes students to different personalities, cultures and ideas. This is good practice for their future work environment.
Sometimes I have students who came from different backgrounds and cultures. I found that some of these students are not willing to integrate to the classroom unless the instructor develop a project where they integrate to the group. Once the project is done, I do not see the continuity of the integration and they return to their silos. How could this effect be breaken?
It seems the more diversity within the group the more each person learns from each other.
Working as we do in one of the largest cities in the country, at a school that draws students in from farm towns two hours away, from expensive suburbs, from depressed inner-city neighborhood, we have a particularly interesting cross-section of students; this can make for particularly lively discussions, truly enlightening exchanges of insight between people with wildly divergent worldviews, and myriad teachable moments.
