Life Experiences

Using a life experiences help students connect better with the topic...They can relate. They know that the instructor is just not impersonal. They have human views.

Life experience not only helps the individual student but many times also assist other students levels of understanding of “real world” on the job concepts others have faced, it broadens their understanding as well.

I like this style of teaching. When you connect life experiences with the subject that you are teaching will help the students to relate to the topic better. I think they understand it better. At least that is how I learn.

Hi Elizabeth!

Self disclosure is a powerful tool for an instructor - it makes us real!

Keep up the good work!

Hi Adel!

That sounds like a winning approach! I always assign a book report in my classes. This could be the first book a student has read in a very long time. It is amazing how excited some of the students can be during their presentation.

Keep up the good work!

Cecilia, I have to agree with you. You have to be a little more personal in sharing your experiences to get your students to relate to what point you are trying to get across to them...it makes it easier for them to remember, and if a little humor is thrown in, they will definitely tend to remember the "punch line"!

Regarding reading assignments, I find that students relate to the personal stories of people who have been successful in the field thay are studying. For example, on assignment for new students in our culinary program is to do a book report on a non-cookbook book reated to or about the cuinary field. I get very positive responses after students do this assignment because they can then relate to the struggles other people have gone through to reach their goals.

I feel life experiences do allow students to incorporate what they are learning for a greater understanding. I teach culinary arts and outside of reading the recipes there is not a lot of reading required for the industry however by brining in life experiences it allows the student to relate to what is being taught.

Absolutely. Life experiences in the class room helps students relate class material to real life situations. It let's them know that just about anything can happen can happen & possibly how to be prepare for such an occation.

I agree that using life experiences help students connect with the content. Many students seeking career training are new to the field and don't think they have much experience they can apply to this new career. The fact is though, that lessons learned through experience can be applied in several other situations. Social skills, work ethic, problem solving, etc.

Life experiences can also motivates students toward becoming successful.

I feel that it is necessary to use life experience in your lecture, because the students can relate to the information better.

I totally agree with this statement. Plus, it helps my students to remember theories because they can relate a story to it.
