Helping students with reading

Lately in my classroom, I have found a handful of students with reading deficiency and limited vocabulary.
I help my students breakdown the words annunciation. Then we work on the prefixes, suffixes and context clues in the sentences.
THen have them repeat the word and meaning to mean.
They are also aware that the word may be on a pop quiz.

These comments remind me of the saying "Reading is Fundamental". I believe that we as teachers should require a standard of student reading comprehension level. Good Job!

Hi Andrew!

So many college level students lack reading comprehension skills as well as logical and critical thinking. When an instructor helps a student attain these skills learning has truly taken place.

Keep up the good work!

I find myself reading to my students quite often. I have also noticed that some of my students can read however, they have major issues comprehending what they have read and require addition tutoring to comprehend the reading assignments.

I have also noticed that my students also need help in the areas of reading and proper pronunciation. I usually have them read allowed and give them frequent spelleing test. I also have them tell me what they think the word means. this tends to help the student.

With teaching adult students I've found that although they may not be ELL students many of them have issues reading. They don't know how to decode new words.
Out books college rated books and make it difficult for the students to learn.

If you find a student(s) that have a difficulty with reading it is my obligation to help this student understand the information. If that means that I get permission to tutor this student than that is what must be done. It must be done in a way that is insures the student of the schools concern for their success in the class room without any judgement on the part of the school. We have a obligation to insure that the student is always at the most benefical position to excel in the career that they have chosen. The class doesn't need to know of the difficulties of one or more students that have this particular issue under the guidelines of the school.

In my classroom, I have a student who is from russia. She has been here in america a little over a year, and has been my student for nine months, and I have been trying to teach her to be grammatically correct.Always correcting her.
