prefix/suffix

Teaching a medical profession means using a lot of vocabulary with latin prefix and suffix. I try to point these prefixes and suffixes out with each term so that the students can become familiar with them and start to apply them to other terms-hopefully then they will be able figure out a disease based on the prefix/suffix. While I have found this helpfull with the majority of the students, I'm not sure how helpful it is to an ELL student

Hi Ellie!

"Building these different threads" is a great way to help students understand the benefit of tying concepts together for learning. My expereince is when a student has what I call "memory connects", retain info sooner and are able to continually build on them for learning.

Keep up the good work!

Medical Terminology can be tough to wrap the mind around, and I encourage students to memorize certain things that will help them remember other things. By creating these different threads of cognition they can later tie similar ones together and strengthen their web of understanding.

Some times it is easy to learn medical terms with out an english base for it. I learned some Sanskrit which had no reference to my speaking language, but had a reference to a physical pose. That bring of physical helped me, so bringing a knenostetic perspective in the lesson is a good plan.

I agree, I tell my students all the time that the terminology will "most" of the time tell you what surgical procedure your doing and pathology associated with the procedure. But the ILL student doesn't always "get" this, and therefore they get frustrated. Their classmates are using med term to answer questions on tests and in class by breaking terms down and they are not a able to do this. I find it as frustrating as the students do.

As an introduction to my classes, I alway stress the importance of learning basic prefixes and suffixes as well as giving them a list of basic ones. I then demonstrat how to break down words if the have no idea of the meaning. Overall, it seems to help and make the student not be so overwelmed at all the terminology given.
