Helping to reach all students
It is important as an instructor to have patience with students who have a learning disability. I know that sometimes I need to work one on one with that individual to help them to grasp the information that was covered in class. We need to go above and beyond are call of duty to help these students so that they do not give up on there goals and dreams.
I agree with this, I encourage the students to come to the Saturday morning tutoring my college offers. It can get them the one on one attention they need without the embarassing effects of asking in front of their peers.
Coming from the HOsptial Management side of things, has helped me in the classroom. I found that in the work environment, I had a diverse staff, just like in the classroom. They all had their strengths and weaknesses..Or learning curve sort of speaking. Not all my supervisors had the patience needed to train the employees who had learning challenges, so I took on those challenges. Now I am teaching, and found that I am able to use my work experience in training staff, teaching students. I agree we need to go above and beyond, but not at the expense of the other students. Therefore, I set time limits in class working with these students. I will then move one and make sure the particular student having trouble, gets mentored outside of the classroom.

Hi Christina!
I definitely agree that we have to go over and above to assist students with learning challenges - but not at the expense of other students. But I like to think that what is used with challenged students can certainly benefit all students. Instructors should access every resource available to them in their school. It's about keeping our own sanity!
Keep up the good work!

I encourage students with a learning disability to come to tutoring to get help with classroom activities. This ensures that they aren't embarrassed in front of other classmates and that they get as much attention as needed for their success.
True especially in such a diverse learner world.
You are right. We do need to go above and beyond the call of duty. I find it difficult when you have a class filled with students that have learning disabilities and also filled with "A" students. Group work and projects can help both of these students.
