ELL students

Students with English as a learning language can be difficult as an instructor to evauluate the problem or question. Sometimes I have a difficult time communicating with ELL students with heavy accents or limited English vocabulary. The best way I have found to face this issue is to take your time to fully understand what they are trying to say. I write down their question or problem so they can see it in writing. Usually seeing it in writing helps us communicate better.

Are most career colleges requiring students to take a basic English course or do they assess basic skills prior to entry?

sometimes it helps for the student to take an english class prior to enrolling.. gives them a better comprehension and makes college courses easier

I agree, being French and having an accent too, I try to write all important information on the white board for my students, to make sure comunication does not get lost. Especialy, with students from diferent states and countries, with all kind of diferent background, you want to make sure everyone understand eachother...

Very good methodology
