In my computer science classes English is not the primary language for about a third of the students. I have found that most read English much better than they may speak or write it. I emphasis the importance of reading before class and give assignments to encourage reading. This helps the English speaking students also. A bigger challenge is getting a student who is having difficulty with English to participate in class discussion.

and very troubling ....my issue is that it can frequently hold an entire class back. Wondering if there shouldn't be some "minimum level of competency."
