It's a new world
America, the melting pot of every civilization around the globe. Yes it is often difficult to teach the ESL student, but is it any different than when my great grandparents came from Europe speaking only German? I agree that it is difficult and needs attention however it is not supported though specialized programs governmental funds. But rather the dedication and willingness of the immigrints to accept the challenge and make a change toward becoming an American Citizen.
I have found it easier to teach ELL students most of the time. I do however, have the occassional ELL student who uses their language barrier as a crutch from doing their best and applying themselves. When I have approached these students to offer remediation and assistance, they feel that they deserve special treatment or a different grading rubric than the other students. It is hard sometimes!

this is true as many times they are more engaged than the students who speak English as a first language.

I find it easier to teach students that English is a second language to. First off they ask more questions, and if I correct them on their grammar or the way they phrase something they appreciate it.
