Dyslexia

My greatest challenge thus far has been working with a young lady with Dyslexia. Not only does she have problems with reading, but that spills over into her writing as well. After discussing with her previous successful techniques, we decided to practice reading aloud together to build her confidence and focusing on short, simple sentences and editing those sentences several times before moving on. Her content is always fantastic and she is a smart girl, she simply needs more time and intense focus than the other students.

I also have a mild case of dyslexia. Letters are entered out of sequence as well as numbers. I've had to slow down my typing and lectures,in some cases,in order to make things sensible.

dyslexia? this is quite a big problem that we have with students. there is no magic solution
but spend more time with them.

I use a lot of patience with students affected by dyslexia. I let them take as much time as they need to take a test.

I do have Dyslexia and what I have found to help me and students in my class. Is to slow down and read it over and over again, if need be up to 5 times. It has work my class for the 10 years.

A friend of mine had Dyslexia when I was growing up and to be honest, he hide it really well. Most really don't want to admit they have an issue.

Ann, your discussion on this young lady's problem is prime example of things that were discussed in this module. The key here is you are taking the time, time, to work with the person. Which is the most important part of the whole situation. Good show.

Ann you have made some great points--I also find a challenge for students with Dyslexia when reading a paper they write when reading it aloud they read it correctly but it is not what is written on the page which makes it difficult for them to correct grammar and spelling errors.

I do have Dyslexia and the method that has helped me in the past and currently is one that my HS Enlish teacher taught me. Read each word and spell it out in my head as I read. It does sound lame but, most Dyslexics have on common problem. We will read faster and faster just to get through what ever itis we are reading.

some of the biggest problems i see is that anyone that says they have dyslexia, and doesn't say what ways best helps them. this creates a bigger challenge

We have a member of our family with dyslexia. We have found that with support and understanding this type of person is very capable. It has helped me to better understand my students that are in the IEP program and help them learn.
