learning hurdles
some students seem to be disadvantaged, not because of a learning disability as such, but rather because they have not been held accountable in previous educational classes and they are not prepared and ready to participate in the class subject they are enrolled in, holding hands and baby sitting has been getting them by so far and they expect this to continue and be giving a passing grade earned or not. trade schools are no exception to this.
we need to quit baby sitting and obligate the students to belly up to the bar and accept responsibility for their actions or inactions whatever the case may be. liberal, do not hurt their feelings must go out the window and accountability needs to again be the rule of law.
I agree with you also. In the trade school environment we often wrestle with the issue of wanting more for our students than they want for themselves. Teaching unmotivated students can kill anyone's enthusiasm for teaching.
Hey Hope, yes, they should earn their own grades, I also work in a trade school, I may have to walk them through a project, sometimes twice, but they will earn their own grade, what ever the grade, it will be what they earned.
Yes, students earn the grades...we do not give grades out. I work in a trade school, and I explain this to the students all the time. I will not pass a student who just shows up. That is not enough.

I strongly agree with you you have to give the students the grade they deserve
Raymond,
I wholeheartedly agree with you. We are in the business of educating students not giving them meaningless diplomas. I see it happening far too often that students get by from class to class without any regards to academic standards and integrity.
I make it a point to tell my students on a daily basis what my office hours are and that I will be happy to stay beyond the official time to help them with their projects, explain anything they need help with or even go through the practice exams ahead of time. I do not however babysit my students. I do not play with the grades so that everybody passes on to the next class. If you give me "A" work then you will get an "A", if on the other end you give me "F" work, you will get an "F".
