I always ask the class on the first day if anyone has any special needs.
i like this approach. i think that sometimes a student doesn't realize they have a disability. this may be because they have been overlooked in the school system and passed from grade to grade.
Hi John!
This approach makes perfect sense. It does keep the student from having to repeat thier challenges with each instructor. They don't start over in every course.
Good job!

Even given the chance to discuss it in private I feel there are some students that do not take advantage of this because they are embarrased.
Our School often has paperwork on hand for the students with special needs, they give it to us on the first day of class so we know what kind of accomadations they require.
letting the student that your aware and care is very inportant
I ask them to see me after class on the first day if they have a need. So we can talk one on one privatly.
Like my colleague, I also inquire about disabilities and explain to the class that we all have some sort of disability in one fashion or another. I then let the class know that if anyone would like to talk about common disabilities, they should see me after class. I do NOT say that if anyone has a disability, they are to see me after class. I suggest that if they would like to know more, I am available for discussion after the class. How it is worded takes the danger, so to speak, out of the discussion and the students are more apt to talk to me.
Hi Rob!
And do you give them the opportunity to discuss that with you in private?
Good job!
