Instructors helping students with disabilities
Helping students with disabilities is important. A few months ago, I had a student who was great hands on (with his skills) however, he bomb test. I took a look at two of his test, and realized that the student did well up to question #20 and there after not well. I spoke to the student, He stated, Ms. A. I don't know what's wrong. I encouraged he to go and see a doctor. In the interim, I decided from that point on, I will have the student take the test in two increments.
This idea worked well. The student score went from 45's to high 90's.
He was grateful and later diagnosed with a learning disability.
By breaking up the test into several increments aid the success of the students with disability.
Good luck!!
Hi Jacalyn!
These are all great strategies for assisting students with disabilities. I would caution that all students are taken into consideration. When doing so, all students will benefit.
Another thought - have the students without disabilities assist/tutor those challenged students.
Keep up the good work!

Once you are aware that the student has disabilities, it is important to determine what kind of disabilities the student has, first of all. Then the teacher can work with the student by allowing additional time to read the material, ask questions about the material, and extra time for the student to take the tests. Also the student might need another student to read the text to them in order to understand the material and respond to it. There are a lot of very intelligent people who have learning disabilities of one kind or another. It is up to the instructor to be innovative and resourceful in how to deal with a person with different learning disabilities.
i beleive first you need to find out how they did in school did they have an outlined educational plan what did they do that helped them to be successful and apply the same tactics in your class setting allow extra time don't make them feel rushed that will only increase the problem you may even find yourself having to give exams virbally to some students yea i know not what instructors want to do but what is the primary goal here the success of the student so we have to do what it takes for the student to be successful without compromising the material that is required
