Recording devices
I have a student with cerebral Palsy and visual problems. I allow her to pull her wheelchair close to the front of the room and also allow her to record every class session. This woman is amazing and I am glad to have her as a student
Hi James!
I've stated in the past that my concern with recorders is that most of the time we have 2 hours of classroom "stuff" which has to listened to again and again and maybe even again for challenged leaners. I suggest that we know our students well enough to discuss their strategy for learner with the aid of a recorder.
Keep up the good work!

I have many students that use recorders in class; I have found that the students with the learning disabilities find this very helpful for them. The fact that they are able to refer back to exactly what was said is helpful. Students like this need that repetition.
I agree. Asking for permission is imperative. Once permission is granted, being able to record the lectures will definitely help. That way the student can go back and fill in any gaps in the lectures.
Hi Alice!
I used recording devices in many of my classes when in college. For me, I was better off not to record because I want to get every word so I listen over and over. Note taking was better from a time management standpoint. But I welcome the use of them in my classroom.
Good work!

I think recording devices are great. I think it is nice students listen to lectures as much as they need it.
I think that recorded lectures can be very useful for all students, not just those with learning disabilities. The big thing is whether or not they actually use them to reinforce the lectures. I've had a few students that aren't as engaged in class because they figure they have everything on tape and can go back over it at a later date. Sometimes I get the sense that that recording is never listened to again, so it is important to make sure the student using the recorder is still involved in the lecture and doesn't "zone" out just because they have everything on tape.
I think that recording lectures can be a great tool for any student as long as they are using the recording as a tool and not as a crutch. If I see a student recording and not taking notes, I will pull them aside later and talk to them about their note taking.
Carlos, I agree that recording devices are a great tool but sometomes the students can get lazy in class thinking they have it all on tape. I had one student who I knew wasn't paying attention in class thinking she had it all recorded but than never listen to the tape and did bot do to well on the test.
Hi Carlos!
I agree that recording devices can be very useful. My biggest challenge when I used one in class was taking too many notes from it. I often spent more time with it than I should have. So I would remind students to use it as a tool and not let it use them!!!
Keep up the good work!

Very powerful tool that can help them pay more attention in class and later at home take notes from the recording.
I allow recording but none of my students have taken me up on the offer. I do encourage them to ask any instructor before they record as some don't want to be recorded. I have taped a few lectures in my years of education and have found it to be a useful tool in reviewing the information presented in the class and to make sure that my notes are accurate.
I have had several students that use hearing aids use recorders in class. It has never been a problem.
I agree Krystal. My personal challenge was spending too much time with the recorder when studying.
Good job!

I think recording lectures could be useful for many students, not just ones with learning disabilities.
Definitely recording devices are a must on a situation like this one. I like the idea.
i used recording of lectures while making the transitino from junior college to university. I was a non-traditional age student, highly motivated to succeed, but not an ELL student. I have many ELL students, and have begun to suggest using a tape recorder to listen to the in-class discussions, when lectures, a second time. My personal experience is that it can help..
