Dyslexia
I had a student with Dyslexia in my Speech class. She used Self-Advocacy by informing me of her disability the first day of the course. I lectured more than usual in this course and the speeches required verbal, not reading skills. She did wonderful in my class.
Correction to that last reply. I found out that a student of mine has a slight case of Dylexia. Learning this now, gives me a better understanding of why some things were not understood by the student. I have not dealt with anything like this before and it's great we have these discussions. I can learn from all the other instructors and make myself better at handling myself as a new instructor. I spend a little more time with this student and their has been progress in both of our abilities.
I just found out that a student has Dyslxia. Now I have to be sure they understand asignments given understood. First time meeting students with Learing Diabliities is tough, but once yo do your part: everything turns out great!!
I have also had dyslexia students. I insure that I add extra lecture and discussion in the classes they are in. I have also had students bring in tape recorders. This seems to be a very helpful tool. I find that students with learning disabilities work twice as hard as the ones without learning disabilities. And I commend them and remember to tell them how their hard work is really paying off.
My grown son is dyslexic. I spent many years in the education system trying to educate them about learning disabilities. In my career development class I discuss learning disabilities and dyslexia. There are always 2 to 4 students that knew they had trouble learning but never knew why. I had one cry after class this quarter. She was so relieved to know she was not stupid and someone was on her side.
I feel that as an Instructor we should be empathetic to our students with learning disibalities.we should learn new ways of doing things that is helpful to the student and in return we will be helping ourselves as Instructors.
Good, you cooperatively found a way around it. I had very serious undiagnosed problems in this area in grade school. Fortunately my mother got me to a reading therapist for 2 years of work until the letters fell into place. Hopefully she will get help before slamming into a class with too much reading and perhaps not as sympathetic an instructor. Guiding her to such resources would be a positive assist too.
