reading issuses
I'm pretty new to teaching so working with students who have issues with reading and under standing what they have read is challenging
This is the same issue I had when I starting teaching. Getting my students on the same page is difficult as well.
As we all or aware, our students today do not read as a rule, they are more visual learners. We as instructor must stress the importance of reading. If astudent dont practice reading how will they be able to read their test? When they read they don't comprehend what they have read.If the instructor detects this in his/her class Ithink it would be a good idea to setup a tutoring session for the student/students. In that session you will give the student the opportunity to read paragraphs and afterwards have them to explain what the paragraph is about.
I think pairing a student who has a learning disability with another student is a wonderful idea. Sometimes students feel intimidated by the instructor or are too embarrassed to actually ask for help. But asking another student is not as bad. They can relate to another student better.
Hi Jacqueline!
Yes, working with challenged students creates challenges for instructor. Most of us are not trained for working with student learning problems. I like the student mentor idea of pairing students who can help each other. Making sure you reenforce central points of the subject is a strategy. For example, boxes with highlighted points, using different colors, repeating important info more than one time. I think that you will find this helps all students.
Keep up the good work!
