Leading by example works well

I often share with my classes that I struggled with reading comprehension for a LONG time until I confessed and sought help. It really helps my students, especially the older ones, to drop their guard and ask for help or confess an issue that they may have.

Rose,
this is a great point. We want to confess our own struggles & failures.

Showing your students by being the example allows them to feel like "its okay" to be real... also, you want them to know that you are not going to ask them to do anything you wouldnt do or havent done.

In our world, no one is perfect. We can overcome if we persist and sharing experiances is very valuable. I learned more from my own mistakes than I learned from my successes.

I also find that when admitting to a class full of students that mistakes are likely to occur and by declaring a disability is another form of asking for leaniency.

Great point! Sometimes the student may feel its just them. But by sharing your experience as an instructor this usually has a great effect on them. By you admitting that you once had the same problem will more than likely have other students to open up.
