Students With Learning Disabilities
When teaching students with learning disabilites, students often are more comfortable speaking about their disabilites if they are not in front of other students, know that they have instructors that are willing to help them, and really want to do well in the course. Students with learning disabilities can be successful with the help of instructors that are willing to put forth an extra effort to help the student succeed.
I also give them extra time , when it clicks with them you can see the hurrdle has been passed as they run with the new understanding of the concept.
When working with students, I give them more time than ususal to complete assignments done in the classroom. If I see effort, Im with them 100%
Students with disabilities are intelligent. Students with disabilites may need more time to take their tests. They score high on their exams.
Prior to coming a Career College instructor, I taught elementary school for several years. During those years I worked with students with varying learning disabilities. Interestingly enough each student was different in how they treated their disability. I had some who did not want anyone to know other than the instructor and would prefer to speak individually and even do testing on different days or in a different classroom so no one else would see how long it would take them. On the other had I had twin boys who embraced it and shared it with their classmates, who in turn rose to the occasion to always help the boys with their work through additional explanation and examples. This worked well as there were certain things they could relay to each other that I could not. It was interesting to watch and learn from them.
