I recently instructed a student that cannot hear but requires sign langauge help in the classroom. Our school has given two instructors to assist during class with delivering sign langauage and the student is wonderful and succeeded in the class very well. This shows that students with disabilities can be successful.

William,
yes, the demonstration of availability is so important to encouraging our students to seek our help.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I agree, I let my students know the first day of class, I am available before and after class to help them succede.

Jenni,
yes if we make ourselves available to the students & encourage them to take advantage of those helps, they often will be successful.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Most of the students that have had learning disabilities have been successful when they utilize the instructor tutoring hours away from the other students in the class.

Todd,

I have to agree with you on this point. I have taken courses on students with disabilities in college and one of the terms that we strive not to use in the classroom with special needs students is "disabled" a better term to use is "challenged". A special needs student has to contend with challenges but they are very focused in the classroom and I like you have had disabled students in the classroom and they do very well with the course content. I agree with your points.

Todd,
this is a great example of how when give the right accomodations, these students can be very successful.
