Working with students with a disability

Students with disability tend to fall between the crack. If you know the signs of the disability you will be able to catch and help that student.

Molly,
and the more open we are to them & show that we want to help, the more likely they are to seek that help from us.

I find that most students who have a learning disability are aware of it. They are also very helpful in letting me know how I can help. As an instructor who does not have a teaching degree I do not know how to help unless the student tells me what they need. So I rely on them to self advocate!

Indeed, early detection of a learning disability will assist the instructor as well as the student in applying a strategy for the relevant disability. Upon learning that a student may potentially present with a learning disability, the instructor may closely monitor the student's formal assessments and implement strategies for learning more effectively. In addition, the instructor may work with the student to understand their learning style. For instance, does the student learn better by watching a PowerPoint during lecture or listening to an audiotape while viewing the literature that is correlated to the audiotape? As a result, communication with the student will certainly enable the instructor to achieve an understanding the source and type of disability.

stacy,
this is so true & by learning these signs we have a better chance of seeing them & then trying to intervene to help the students.
