Working with students with learning disabilites

Our students lose points for spelling on exams and assignments. This can be a real sore spot for students with dyslexia.

I teach microbiology, and there are many long scientific names for organisms, test reagents, etc. This is challenging enough for most students, let alone students with learning disabilities. I try to highlight root words, prefixes and suffixes, and never make students feel bad when they mispronounce these words. Hey, if we were teaching in England, lots of things would be spelled and pronounced differently.
