IEP's

I always ask students during our first class session to inform me of any special needs. Every so often I will have a student that is willing to share their IEP and from that we can talk about how I can best support the student in learning the course content. This prevents a situation where the student falls behind or loses confidence in his/her abilities.

I agree. I was not even aware of what an IED was until I read this course! We are not allowed to ask the student if they have a learning disability, supposedly due to the discrimination act. I had a student once who was hard of hearing and I had to fail her because she did not have the auscultory skills required for the class/job. It was only then she told me of her disability. Other times I have suspected learning disabilities but have not been able to approach the student due to our policy.

Christie,
this is a very unfortunate situation. I believe that unless the student discloses to you & presents his/her IEP that unfortunately there is not much that can be done. Once the student shares this information you can then help them as best as possible.

I was told that a student had an IEP but was not told what the disability was. It was very frustrating because the student didnt understand many concepts in the medical program. I sounded the alarms but it wasnt until lab class that people payed attention. This student was transfered to another program that was best suited for her. Any suggestions for handling future students???

Too often, instructors make an inquiry or discover there is an IEP after a poor student performance event (i.e. an assessment, written assignment). Rather than be reactionary, information at the beginning of the course and avoid problems. It may be important to review policy and procedures to identify and allow instructor access to IEPs.

Deward,
yes, if you can get a copy of the IEP this is very helpful information.

The IEP is important in letting the instructor know what is needed for the student.

Fatemeh,
I think this show of openness & support goes a long way in encouraging the students to open up.
