Getting them to express their learning disability in the first place. Many are ashamed of the disability and do not want to ask for help.

Clearly understanding their learning dissability and indentify what method works best for that individua;.

Alexadner,
I think the key is to get to know each of our students as individuals, which we should be doing anyway. This way we can best help them where they struggle.

When working with students with learning disabilities the hardest thing is finding out what strategy will work for them to learn best. There are many different strategies we can utilize as instructors, but not one way will suit all learning disabilities. The instructor should research how to best connect with the student with the disability and use said approach.

Getting the student to let you know about their issue.

I woudn't really call it a challenge. But you have to first talk to the student and get an idea of what is going to work or help him the best,so he can be successful in your class. Usually it just involves taking a little extra time with him or her explaining things or showing things.

Sometimes students with learning disabilities are afraid to self-report their disability to the teacher as they don't want their peers to think badly of them. Learning disabilities aren't always easily perceived by a teacher.

These students tend to use other ways of getting through the class by using their own workarounds, even refusing a teacher's help.

Thomas,
I think the key here in what you say is that willingness to adjust my methods to accommodate the diverse learning styles represented in the classroom.

Recognizing the disability and adjusting methods to accomodate all students.

Having them disclose there disabilities without embarrasing them

Experience! My lack of patience is no ones fault buy mine. I understand that! You don't show your frustration, it's an art.

Karen,
Great point you make here. I agree that we need to talk with these students & find out what approach has worked best for them in the past. Through this we get to know them & also hopefully are more helpful to them.

William,
Could you elaborate a little more? How do you work through the feeling that these students are overwhelming your patience?
Ryan

Understanding that each one has an approach that may work better for them and treating them as though that one approach to their learning will not be beneficial.

My patience! I don't have a bottomless pit!

This is definitely a challenge. In this situation we may just have to be as patient & help them as much as possible.

The most challenging aspect of working with those that have a learning disability is to understand what exactly their disability is and then how best to support it.

I think that first and foremost we have to understand what the learning disability is; after that, calculate the students's needs, and do your best to accommodate those needs.

First you have to determine if the student is open to your help. If so at what level. You must monitor the response to determine your level of imput. Each experience this student and all students for that matter is a positive one. Success or failure is a step forward toward the path of achievement and understanding.
Sensitive Focus and Support is where we can begin.
