Reinforcement and Praise
I believe reinforcement and praise are both personal, how can you differentiate situations for both to be used?
Juanita,
The sandwich effect is soemthing that I continually use, even with employees. I start off with praise, state what I need to address, then I end on a positive note.
Judy Mohammed
Yes reinforcment is good, we all learn more and better when there is positive reinforcement. It makes us feel good about ourselves. That is why it is great to do what we call the sandwich effect, first we talk about the good things durring the practical and then we ask what would you do differently, then what could we do better and then move to what is wrong and how to correct it.
Steve,
Absolutely! People have become so accustomed to using spellcheck and grammar check that they no longer care to learn teh mechanics of them. Too sad!
Judy Mohammed
Reading has so many advantages that I too, wish more people would do it. Besides the benefit of gaining specific information, one's vocabulary, spelling, and grammer improve as well. So much more stimulating having a conversation with well read people.
Steve,
You are so right, too many people take reading for granted. As a teacher, I encourage students to read more constantly.
Judy Mohammed
It is fantastic whenever someone learns something new, especially if it is something many people take for granted, like reading.
Steve,
Praise can also be given for the accomplishment of reading and keeping up with the material. It can also encourage others to read. Wouldn't that be great! :)

I believe reinforcement is a form of praise that confirms in a student their actions are commendable and to keep it up. Reinforcement is something that should be done regularly as warranted. Praise on the other hand is a compliment to a student for something more specific as to an accomplishment after hard work.
Franz,
Praise is an essential part of learning. Like you say, everyone likes to be praised and research shows that we do work better and harder in such environments.

Everyone loves to be praised for there work. It makes people feel better and makes them enjoy what they are doing.
I believe if we are having fun we work harded and if we have people telling us we are doing good we enjoy and have a fun time
David,
Students, in fact all of us, enjoy being praised, especially when we work very hard. As you are aware, most students work hard and sometimes, they are not successful. You are right to praise them though, for whatever effort they put forth.

I am a culinary instructor; I taste student food almost everyday. I find that I often reinforce students by telling them they have done a good job on the dish with the exception of this that and the other. When a student has done a great job producing the dish I will tell them how great it is and that they have mastered the technique. I take the praise one step further; I will say out loud to the class if you would like to see this dish done correctly come and taste John’s he's done an excellent job with it. I don’t do this too often but I know the students are really proud when I do it.
John,
Both should be used in the classroom regularly. Praise is given when students answer questions correctly or when they are successful in performing tasks. Reinforcement is used to encourage good behaviors - perhaps they were not sure about what they were doing and might hesitate to try again. Positive reinforcemnet will encourage them to continue their work and try other methods.
