open and closed questions
Open and closed discussions during the lectures is a very good opportunity to get the class involved with the subject at hand, and is a tool that can be used to include participation of students that are not involving themselves in the discussion. Very helpful.
Stephen,
This is an excellent technique. I let my students know that the first day of class is the most important
day. Prior to the start of classes, I send out an email telling about my class and some of my expectations.

I agree completely and would like to add that on the fist day of class I tell my students that we will not be have a "lecture" period but that we will have a discussion period. I will present a number of topics and information that they need to learn and know and then we as a class will reinforce the learned material through the use of questioning. They will ask me, I will ask them and we will build on each question to make sure that all the students have had a part in the discussion.
Ralph,
Yes indeed. Asking quesdtions makes classes interactive and keeps students engaged. Lecturing alone can be quite boring.
