How important are wait times?

Yes they do, and sometimes we need to be looking at the clock as well, so it is often left for us to use discretion.

Thank you for sharing. It takes getting accustomed to using wait time; however, it does work to the benefit of the students.

I've learned an instructor needs to use appropriate wait time after questions because not only does the student need time to formulate an answer, but they will wait for another student to answer before adding to it. I have had great classroom discussions this way because it helps some students open up more. Subsequent student comments usually lead to more detailed and more well thought out responses by still others.

This is exactly how to use wait time. You need to set a limit and try to use probing to encourage the student.

i do set a time limit but it gives the student enough time to think and feel great

Wait time is very important; you want to give the students time to develop their thoughts. I initially had some problems with giving wait time, but I was able to overcome this. I believe that this has benefitted my students.
