2ND WAIT TIME

One of the challenges I face in the classroom occurs when several students are calling out their answers at once. Although it a great scenario when students are engaged and responding, it has been a challenge for me when one or more persons calls out an incorrect answer while other students call out a correct answer. In the past I have stated, "That is correct," and I repeated the correct answer, while ignoring the incorrect answer. However, after reviewing this module, I have to wonder if I am handling this properly. I feel that I may have been discounting the student(s) that had incorrect answers, by not addressing their answers specifically. Is there anyone that has any suggestions on how to handle this situation in the classroom? Thank You, Jodi

Duane,

This is exactly what you should do. From the onset, I inform students about raising their hands to respond.

Chris,

This could prove difficult with everyone shouting out their answers.

Jodi,

This is a procedural issue. From the beginning, I let me students know that they cannot all speak at the same time. I specifically ask what happens if we all speak at the same time what will we hear and the two common responses are noise and nothing. I ask them to raise their hands and I will call on them - this way I can address and validate all answers individually.

I find that when several student respond with the wrong answer.....one will alwys say the correct answer but very low if he is not sure.......then does not get the recognition. I probably need to say the students name before asking the question and train the class not to respond unless called on.

Thank the student for the answer and address why it is not right.
