open question

According to my experience Open Questions are good only while teaching if you ask in Test, students don't like it.

Theodore,

Open questions can be used in short answer or essay type questions. They are the best types to use in class; they encourage critical thinking and help instructors to guage the students' comprehension.

Open questions have their place in tests. They give the student the opportunity to relate the extent of their knowledge to a question. Open question also help the student develop their ability to express clearly the process that they used to arrive at their current understanding of an issue.

David,

Open ended questions encourage more critical thinking and I beleive students enjoy being challenged and seek opportunities for interaction.

When it comes down to it, whether or not the students "like" a type of question shouldn't be our primary focus as instructors. We need to be more concerned about the effectiveness of the questions and whether or not our questions allow us to check our students' understanding of the material. Open ended questions (essay questions etc) do a GREAT job of this and really force the students to truly understand the material, rather than just repeat memorized information or make "educated guesses" on multiple choice questions.

Dinesh,

In my experience, students enjoy the interaction brought on by open ended questions.
