Open questions
In my opinion Open ended questions encourage more critical thinking.
ROBERT,
That is a good check mark for you. I have used cards to select students before, when I did not quite know their names.

Questions that are well placed throughout the lecture will keep the students engaged and also lets the instructor know key concepts are being understood.
For one subject I teach I have a deck of cards with questions on them (open and closed) that I walk around the room with and I try to go through the whole deck in one class period.
Rena,
I always plan my questions; I even plan the appropriate jokes to make. This helps me to control the class and keep them on topic.

Usually I do not plan my questions. I do plan my lecture. My lecture is often becomes as a discussion.and then I do have questions and my students as well. So, this way the lesson becomes very interesting for the instructor and for the students.
Rebecca
I usually plan my questions into my classes, I generally know at which point to insert appropriate questions.

I can accept the concept that open ended quesitons generate more critical thinking, but for me developing the open ended questions "on the fly" is not easy. An open ended question urges the students to come more prepared to the class. An if I come with prepared open-ended quetions I feel more comfortable teaching.
Theodore,
This is very true. There are times though, especially when time is limited, that it may be necessary to use closed questions.

I agree that it is our responsibility to develop critical thinking in our students. When we ask a student an open ended question; the student will have to completely understand the question. The student will then have to determine the possible factors or elements that are relevant to our question. The student will then determine how the elements effect the question and come to a conclusion. After the student comes to a conclusion the student can then answer our question. This process of analysis is very beneficial to a student.
Laxmi,
This is very true and, as teachers, it is our responsibitlity to develop critical thinking in our students.
