Teresa,

This is good advice. Students also appreciate application questions a lot.

Judy Mohammed

I would tell my mentor to use as many open ended and application questions as possible because in the real word that is what is used more in most careers. To get depth of knowledge one must know how to apply what they have learned in school to real world applications.

Christina,

Excellent advice. You should have teh opportunity to work with new teachers.

Judy Mohammed

Marshall,

The good thing about these classes is that they can be reviewed at any time.

Judy Mohammed

Bruno,

Good advice. You may want to let them know the importance of probing and open-ended questions.

Judy Mohammed

Tom,

This is great advice. You should be able to mentor new teachers.

Judy Mohammed

Chanel,

Good advice. We need to probe rather than give out the answers and definitely challenge our students.

Brenda,

This is good. I usually plan appropriate jokes into the lesson at appropriate times.

I would express to the new instructor the importance of using questioning effectively in the classroom by asking thought provoking and open-ended questions that challenge thinking, allowing them to express their opinions and creativity with the instructor and their fellow classmates. I would also inform the new instructor that from my experience in teaching, I have learned that when students know that I will challenge them with compelling questions they perform at higher levels and are more inclined to actively participate in the discussions. For students with different learning styles, this empowers them to feel more comfortable expressing themselves and contributing to group discussions. With positive reinforcement from interactions on the discussion board, an increase in participation usually occurs, therefor creating an enjoyment in participating in the course. I would also offer the new instructor a variety of different articles explaining the importance of using questioning effectively in the classroom and how to apply the research discussed to their own courses successfully.

I'm so glad to have this class now as I'll have this exact opportunity beginning next Monday. I am going to share my notes about "Open and Closed" questions, the two types of "Open" questions, and the four types of "Comprehension Questions". Next I wish to revisit my lesson plans in order to highlight the use of more open questions and practice the principles of Wait Time, Redirection, Probing, Reinforcement, and Use of Praise.

Always review the previews lesson with questions. Leasing to the students questions like this you can bring new ones to the table and see how far you can take your students with basic questions. "Pick their brain"

If I were the mentor of a new instructor at our school, I would tell them to relax and slow the class down. Students and teachers both try to race to the next answer. Let's take time to understand and probe what makes the answer to the question correct. I leave some silent time between questions so that students who would like to ask some questions of their own. We even get students asking questions of each other and quizzing their fellow students. From those question I can build on the lesson.

I would tell them when asking open ended questions, but students struggle, lead them to the answer,do not tell them. Always ask questions to see understanding and ask rhetorical questions to make students ponder in the creative field.

I would encourage them to ask open ended questions peratining to the subject and always she enthusiasm to their students. I would also encourage them to make it a fun time and not a dreaded time.

ha nie,

What would you tell them about these?

Judy Mohammed

Anthony,

This is very good advice. Be sure to share it with new instructors.

Judy Mohammed

Patrick,

These are very good pieces of advice. You must share these with new instructors.

Judy Mohammed

Larry,

We need to build rapport with the quiet students before putting them on the spot. Talk to them outside of class about their interests.

First you need to explain the importance of having patience in a classroom while asking students questions. Most students do not want to answer the proposed question because they feel they are wrong even if the answer is right. I would explain that while teaching mix up questions such as a few easy ones and then much harder ones. Add questions that may have more then one answer, this may get a classroom discussing going. You my have to put some questions into a jeopardy style, were you give an answer and let them find the question. I also instruct the new teacher to call on students to get everyone involved not just the ones who always know the answer. Perhaps in some cases, lead the students to the answer if they struggle with it.
