I agree that open questions allow for more participation from the entire class and it really lets me see if they are understanding the material.

Open questions also affords us the opportunity to see how much the students know. Sometimes they do not even know what they know and it helps to build their confidence.

When I ask questions in class I try to give my students enough wait time to answer each question. Open questions work very well in a classroom, because it allows more participation from the students.
