Students who are terrified of participating in class
I occasionally have students who are so afraid of participating in class that they would rather lose a significant percentage of their grade than say anything. Participation is a required component in all grades, so foregoing it is not an option. I always talk privately with these students about their reluctance to participate, but that is successful at best 50% of the time.
Any thoughts?
In the past, I had students who were shy present to me only. After I have critiqued their presentation, they usually have more confidence to present to a group.
I go over the information, then I do a review of the information. I have found that once they are comfortable that they have the correct answer, the participation increases.
In the past I have had those students to shy to do their presentation in front of the class present their presentation to myself and a few of the other instructors and we boost their confidence until they feel comfortable speaking in front of their class.
I've encountered many students like this. What works for me is to make the student comfortable and confident. I won't call on this student until 2-4 other students have discussed the question.
This gives the reluctant student time to think, prepare, and then answer the question. I have great results using this method.
I try to learn a little something about each of my students, personal interests, hobbies, etc.. then I use these little tidbits in general terms of course to work them into the conversation and help them feel included and part of the group. More often than not, this gives them a sense of belonging and helps them to open up. Or I also will make eye contact and ask them for their take on the subject, when appropriate of course
