Competency-Based Assessment

Describe a formative and a summative assessment you use in your lab or shop environment.

Donna,

Some times it takes a little longer.

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

I do the same thing. But I feel that some how I failed them first because I did not recognize what typ[e of learner they were to help them sooner.

Anthony,

Describe the most common problems to the students. This should most likely result in similar outcomes if not better.

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

In cases where Lab End Of Course Tests are all hands-on I will show or tell students what the test consists of. The intention is to put a target up so that students have a clear idea of what is expected of them to be done by the end of the class and they are continuously working towards learning the new skills.

Sherry,

Can that be a long wait?

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

Most of the time everyone does very well, we actually haven't hade anyone fail. If they do fail they are out of the program and have to re-enter when the class comes around again.

Sherry,

You say "hopefully". What have you found to be the reality?

Ron Hansen, Ed. D.

I work at a Career School and we teach Dental Hygiene. As you might expect we are in "clinic" or "lab" as often as possible. The students are graded everyday on several different technique's/competency's. So this would be the formative assessments. At the end of the course, the students have a final exam where all their skills are graded accumulatively. During the course, because of daily assessments, the student and the instructor know what area needs work and we can then address this issue. Hopefully, by the time their final comes around, they shouldn't have any areas of great need.
