how to keep them engaged??
I always have students who finish fast and first due to previous experience.. how do I keep them engaged with the lab after there done?
Katherine,
Students stay engaged and reinforce their learning when you involve them in this manner.

This is a problem that we have in our labs often. I like teaming up newer students with more advanced students or to have a group that constantly finishes early, assist me with my setup for the next class or next demonstration.
Chanel ,
Involving students in different ways engages them in the learning.

I always have my students help the newer students with tasks that are challenging or time consuming. I may also have them help me maintain the lab by organizing supplies and helping with inventory.
Arthur,
Have the students work in teams and have them help the other students. Finishing first does not necessarily mean they cannot improve.

I'm not sure what kind of lab you are teaching in but our students are always working with a partner or in small groups when we are in lab. When I notice that some of the students tend to keep picking the same partners and finish fast so they can leave early I usually will encourage/require them to start working with different partners. I try to get the more experienced students to work more with the less experienced students. Often they end up more involved and share their experiences more.
