Implementing a flipped classroom can be accomplished with ease for adult learners. For two years students enrolled in remedial math classes have viewed pre-recorded math lectures and practiced applications in class. They are learning the value of taking charge of their education while deepening their skills and knowledge.
Some of my collegues who teach math in middle school and high school have found that they must convince the students, the parents, and the administrators the merits and benfits of using a flipped classroom method. Once the stakeholders are convinced the teacher must select prerecorded videos or record his or her own video for each concept. Students will watch the video and complete some practice examples at home and come with questions for the next class. As my classes have progressed through the semesters, one reflection on flipped learning has guided my practice this semester, students must know the value of viewing the lectures before class in order to buy into watching the videos consistently; therefore, a 10% of the total score for the class has been established for watching the video and taking notes to share with their classmates during the next class session has been established.

SUSAN,

Wonderful. I'm thrilled that you are taking these components and implementing them into your classroom. Now if we could convince some of our colleagues to do the same thing our students would benefit greatly. Good Job!

Good Afternoon
The "flipped" classroom offers instructors the opportunity to engage students in the learning process.
I have started incorporating this methodology in some of my classes recently. The implementation is taken in a "phased" approach starting with a reduction in "lecture" time balanced with an increase in student discussion time. If you view this as a balance, the scales are slowly tipped in the direction of student discussion.

At the same time, an introduction of more digital resources is balanced with a decrease in traditional materials. Over time, the students will not be aware of these transitions and will be become familiar and comfortable with a new way of learning. This should decrease anxiety, as well as the diminish the fear of something new.

The students should not feel targeted when there is more personalized attention but with this gradual approach, they should be more outgoing in their responses and also be encouraged to introduce new ideas as well.
The phased approach may take a bit longer but I feel it will be more fluid and more transparent to the student. thankyou
Susan
