Arthur,

Technology can be an issue with some students but I agree that we have to encourage them and support them.

Kanidrus ,

This is true. It seems like technology changes daily. If you want someone to set up your new phone or computer, give it to a fifth grader and they will get it done.

Sylinda,

Remember, we're not removing the instructor from the classroom, we are simply moving them to a new role. Hopefully a role that will be even more helpful to the student.

Angel,

I agree. I think lower levels of technology skills are often a major issue for some adult learners.

Marcia,

I agree that some students need more structure. I don't know if I agree that the traditional class provides this structure. I think the structure comes from the instructor - so it really depends. Also, maybe it's time that students are held accountable. Just a thought.

Shara,

Very good points. I agree that all these are issues. I also agree that as the word spreads, other students may get on board.

Beverly ,

True, the immediate feedback will not be available; however, the students will have time to think about what their questions really are and then hopefully the discussion will be ever deeper.

Dale,

I agree that all of these are certainly real barriers.

It goes against the traditional mode of learning and often times, students who have not been successful in the traditional arena find it hard to adapt to this as well. Students who do not have stable home lives have a hard time making the time to review the work and lectures, causing them to come to class unprepared. Students need internet access and electronic devices to access the work and not everyone can afford this.

You are correct, but sometimes all it takes is to show them how much easier and faster technology can be when you show them how.

Angel,
Many adult learners are afraid of technology. Computers can be hard to use for them and the thought alone make them shy away.

Brandi,
I have to agree with you on that. There are students who need that extra boost from being in the class with peers and an instructor. Yes, instructors will definitely have to be very familiar with various technologies in order for them to make this a successful classroom.

That does tend to be an issue. There are a number of issues with adult learners and their reluctance to try new things

I do believe there are issues and barriers to the flipped classroom. Some students need more structure than others and the traditional classroom provides this. Also, some students are not accountable for their own learning and having them be responsible to listen to the lectures on their own would not work for them; thus they would come to class unprepared and not be able to fully participate in the learning activites which would hinder the entire class learning.

Two things come to mind immediately. The first is the students who will not do anything outside of class due to a busy schedule or the belief that all the learning should take place at school. The second is initial reluctance of the students. the feeling that they don't have anyone to ask questions to immediately.
I believe both of these barriers will be alleviated as the proactive students relate the positive experience and the some begin to fall behind becuase they are not utilizing this tool.

An important barrier would be a student that does not have access to the internet. I teach adult learners and you would be surprised how many of them do not have computers at home. Another barrier would be getting an unmotivated student to actually do the work at home. Some students need that extra push that a physical teacher can give. When left on their own, many students just procrastinate.

One issue in viewing a pre-recorded lecture is that the student will not be able to get immediate feedback should a question arise. They will need to remember the question until the next class meeting. Also, potential spontaneous class discussion will be eliminated.

Carrie,

I agree that student motivation and self-discipline can be a stumbling block. However, the ability to view the lectures at home before coming to class should actually help the students with their time management issues.

Dr. Moody Crews

The flipped classroom has many benefits, however a barrier to its success can be the student lack of motivation and self discipline. College students today generally have many other responsibilities than learning and that might get in the way of their learning outside of the classroom. Admittedly that would also get in the way of students completing homework in the traditional classroom.

Earle,

Access to technology is a real issue for some students. With the rise of technology in teaching, it is easy to forget that all students don't have the same access that we have become accustomed to.
