Are some careers (e.g., military, law enforcement) more likely to develop concrete thinkers? How can one best modify concrete thinkers to make them be more appreciative of abstract thought?
Absolutly, it becomes a part of our personality and our very fiber. For example, law enforcement officers or attorneys will generally develop a sense of mis-trust or become tainted by their experiences.
I think so. Certain professions must use certain parts of the brain and certain learning techniques over and over again, while they may never use others. I think that the important thing to impart to students, regardless of their career choice or thinking pattern, is how to critically evaluate information. "Does what I just learned make sense?" "Is the person talking to me credible?" etc.
I agree that being educated in a particular, specific area will influence the way a person perceives things and applies his/her knowledge. For example, a trained scientist will look at situations and information differently than a classically trained ceramicist.
Hi Carly,
Right you are. We need to provide all the assistance we can to help student make informed, meaningful, and realistic career choices.

i think careers can definitely influence a way a person perceives things ,however i feel that a lot of times a person is drawn to a particular carrer because of previous life experiences, or teachings. it is our challenge as learning facilitators to broaden the learners horizons and let them explore all sides of the situation, and make more informed choices.
Hi Judith,
Good point. I is sad to me when I encounter a students that has chosen a career area in which he/she is not interested. This may be due to family or peer pressure. So the more career information we can share with students early on in their post secondary education the greater service we will be providing them so they can make informed, meaningful, and realistic career choices.

All careers can influence the way a person thinks, if the chosen career field, was not properly thought out in advance, prior too, an individual taking the plunge. This type of behavior can definitely determine, one's success or failure in life.
Hi Sandra,
This is why students need to have career information throughout high school and college that helps them to make informed, realistic and meaningful career choices. This way they will know they have selected the right career path.

Absolutly, most students think being a doctor is too difficult because of the learning and education involved. SO they opt out of the idea of being a docyor.
Careers definitely influence how a person perceives things. Not necessarily one-sided though. I did accounting and always though that there was a disconnect from the numbers or accounting individuals than others in the organization.
I do think careers can influence the way a person perceives things. I also think when you are trained in a perfession it makes you look at things one sided.
