When introducing a new recipe, I will have the students recall a the closest experience to it. Knowing that learning happens more effectively when connected to a personal experience, will help me plan lessons.
I like what you say about dismissing a student.only wish that was a option. That not a choice that can be used. Anything else what would work?
I leant from the difference between concrete perception and abstract perception. i think as a culinary arts intructor I can and should rely on both aspects in my approach of a new ingredient: not only descriptive but ask the students in what they can recall and what they can imagine doing with it.
Hi Franz,
Great instructional delivery plan. You are using repetition and reinforcement which are two essential components of learning. Thanks for sharing this strategy with us.

I try to hit at least 3 samples of the subject in the different ways to the class on the subject matter. 1- through story, 2- by demonstration, 3- hands on application. This seems to bring the importance of the lecture to them .
Hi Dave,
Good point. This helps instructors to target student learning preferences at a much more accurate rate.

Hi Luke,
Good to hear about the content you were able to take away from this module. I know is going to expand your expertise and delivery abilities. Keep up the good work.

by knowing the different ways that the brain uses and stores information i can tailor my lesson plans to target the several layers of retention ie. workingvs. semantic vs. short term memory etc.
Learning about brain functions and strategy will help me assess the level of knowledge interjection I can present to my class. This module was very helpful in clarification of this aspect of teaching.
I learned that with career oriented instruction examples are a good teaching method. I do this now but can increase my use of examples by finding Websites and paper related to the material.
I am going to try to use examples of poor teaching methods and how it makes the recipient feel. Most of the information related in class will have to be taught in an industry setting. To ensure that the information is relayed correctly the learners will have to teach the next person secretly and we evaluate the information taught and received. The class asses the receiving and teaching methods and the leaner has their input. This should be an effective for my assessment of what obstacles each learner might have as an obstacle for their learning. I’m excited to try it and see how it works and how retention is gained.
All students have different brains obdviously, they also learn at different rates and in different ways. As an instructor, we must take on a chameleon role if youwill and adapt to each students indvidual needs. Not always an easy task, but necessary to ensure we are reaching all the students and their individual needs.
The application of learning levels such as being on a concrete and or abstract level will help me as an instructor to gage where I need to improve and apply methods to help the students to understand and to learn in more efficient ways.
I think that for most learners is comes in steps. You have to build on information learned to retain it in your long term memory. For example, I teach a radiology course for dental hygiene students. When we have our first lecture it is based on the information that we will be doing in that weeks lab. This process continues until the course is completed. The students are becoming competent academically and clinically without feeling like there are two different courses. This method helps review the information from the previous weeks lecture and lab and allows the student to build on that information until competent.
Hi Ellory,
Good way to offer variety to the learning process for your students. The example you cited is a good was to get the students to remember words. Creating connections in their minds is what learning retention is all about.

By understanding the basis of learning I will be able to reach more of my students. Students in my class come from such varied backgrounds that I must use concrete and abstract examples, semantic and episodic memorization tools. By targeting more of my students through this use of varied instructional methods, I become a more effective teacher. For example, I might ask the class to memorize a list of 15 definitions. Then I might ask them to relate the words to a personal experience they have had.
Hi David,
Thanks for sharing this story. I really like hearing stories like this. It shows with some effort, caring and effort success can be achieved. You have a successful student that I am sure is grateful that you helped her in her class so she could achieve her career goals.

Probably not PC, but with one particularly challenging young lady who seemed to work off a list of boundaries to try daily, I had her walking laps around the building before I would allow her back into the classroom and it seemed to calm her down enough to focus and not distract everyone else. Admittedly I was pushed and this was about the tenth intervention we tried. Prior to that we tried a variety of "normal" interventions including meeting with my director and the dean- all of which accomplished nothing. Bright girl- has a great job and is doing well now!
Understanding the many different learning styles of my students help me deliver the material so they can digest it properly.
Understanding the way the brain works and memorises things will help me put things in an order easier to understand and remember. giving the brain bite size pieces to aid in memorisation.
