Learning to materail
I find a great way to make sure the students the necessary information is by various methods. I tend to put very important information on the board, and then describe it to the students.
Paul,
One of the strategies I use in situations like this is to put my students into learning/work groups. By putting the students that are acquiring the material quickly with the students that are being challenged I can assign work that has them working together and sharing their learning process. These groups gel quickly and they help each other out and experience mutual growth.

One of the biggest difficulties that I have is the different learning abilities of my classes. Some of the students take information much more quickly than others. This causes a problem when review time comes. Some people jump to answer questions and others, it seems like it is their first time hearing some of these terms or ideas. It can be frustrating for the people who know it when I try to take the time for catch-up. It is frustrating for the people trying to catch up, because they know there are people who have it down cold. It is frustrating for me to see such a distance between the group. Any ideas on this?
Darlene,
I do to. They are a challenge but it is fun to try and get them involved in the class and to start to see the value of being in school. Sometimes it works and sometimes not but I do know that I have done my best to try and help them create a future for themselves.

I find it difficult to motivate students that do not want to be in class. But I enjoy trying to
Paul,
this is a great point in the learning process. I also work with time lines in class that allow the student to have to do research on their material, then they have to create a timeline for a specific time frame. I have found that teaches them to have to understand their work. It also takes them to a higher level of think in Bloom's taxonomy where they can apply these thinking skills to no matter what they are cooking that day. It is a great thing to watch them succeed their accomplished goals when using these time lines. Little do they know this is one of the most important skills that they need to develop to work and manage in the industry.
Best regards,
Pete
Using several methods is very effective for me as well. It helps them to remember information from various experiences.
Paul,
Good point on how you plan your instruction. I really like your use of time, since your field is based upon time. The students need to learn t work smart and fast if they are going to be successful.

I agree and take it one step further. I teach in a culinary school and it's important to be consistent each day by writing out a lesson plan or prep list so to speak. I even include specific times for the student to complete each task. It's easy for them to get lost in one project but in reality, they will have to learn how to multi-task more than ever to stay competitive.
