inspire

To truely inspire, the up most dedication and passion must be there. Inspiring takes more than knowledge on a topic, but the passion to motivate others to be equally passionate as well

Justin,
Well said and a very important point to remember as we do our instructional planning.

We can't just be experts in a field that simply deliver knowledge. We have to be facilitators of learning so the students can leave the classroom and continue their education.

Miyuki,
Great story and example of how we need to connect the dots of learning for our students. Your husband was able to do so with his player in a very unlikely manner. I'm sure not many football coaches use the moon as a starting point. Thanks for sharing this with us.

To truly inspire you must find out what is important to your target audience and somehow tie in what you are teaching to that. The best example of this I witnessed was while watching my husband coach youth football. There was one player that refused to tackle no matter how hard they tried to teach him. One evening while they were scrimmaging he was looking skyward instead of playing. When my husband asked him what he was doing he said "the moon is the only star in the sky coach". To which my husband cleverly replied he wanted him to make the player in front of him to have to see the moon by knocking him on his back. Amazingly the child responded and periodically throughout t,he season my husband would ask him how many times he forced his opponent to be looking at the moon.

Amer,
I would talk individually with that students and try to see what challenges he or she is having with the class. See if an individual project might get the student excited. See if you can draw the student out during class discussions.

Most of my students are engaging but I would like to know how to inspire a student who is not engaging in the class room or with his classmates?

Richard,
Good point. If the class is fun and we are learning a lot through the instructional activities then I'm not going to enjoy teaching. I have been at this a long time and it is still exciting to be in the classroom and help another group of students to move forward in their education.
